Eligibility

Who is qualified to register for ESI in India?
Having more than 10 employees is required to be eligible for ESI registration. In some areas, businesses can register for ESI only if they have more than 20 employees. Below are some additional requirements that must be met in order to be registered for ESI.

An employee whose gross income is up to Rs. 21,000 per month can benefit of this with the support of the employer.
The establishment is registered with the EPFO.
The entire contribution to ESI is 6.5% of the gross wage, and it is further broken down as follows:

  • 4.75% by the employer
  • 1.75% of the employee

For industrial units where there is a risk of injury or health problems, all employees making less than Rs. 21,000 must register for ESI.

ESI Registration FAQ?s


The ESI plan is a comprehensive social security programme created to achieve the goal of socially protecting organised sector employees in the event of sickness, pregnancy, disability, and death due to workplace damage.

The 21,000 gross salary will be used to determine the ESI Scheme. The ESI will remain constant if the salary is higher than 21,000 dollars.

The existing wage ceiling for coverage under the ESI Act is Rs. 21,000 per month w.e.f from 1.01.2017.

In the case of a person with a disability, the maximum wage is Rs. 25,000. The ESIC system does not cover workers or employees who make more than Rs. 21,000 per month.
